The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge which was the longest suspension bridge in the world upon its opening. Its construction began in January 1933 and was completed in April of 1937. The bridge gets its name because it spans what is known as Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean. Prior to completion of the bridge the only short route connecting San Francisco and what is now Marin Country was by boat across the San Francisco Bay. Ferry service began in 1820 although regualr ferry service was not in existence until 1840.

While many people wanted a bridge that would cross the Golden Gate many experts at the time said that it couldn't be done due to the constant high winds, blinding fog, strong currents and tides and water depth at 335 feet in the center of the channel. When a plan for the bridge was finally approved it initially recieved much opposition including the Department of War who was concerned that the bridge would interfere with ship traffic and the Southern Pacific Railroad which was concerned about the competition to its ferry fleet.

The Bridge opening celebration began on May 27, 1937 and lasted for a week. The day prior to vehicle traffic being allowed, 200,000 people crossed the bridge. The bridge is one of the most beautiful and recognized bridges in the world. The roadway is hung off two cables that pass throughout the two main towers and are fixed in concrete at each end. Each cable is made of 27,572 strands of wire. There are 80,000 miles of wire in each of the two main cables, enough to go around the world 5.79 times. The famous orange color was originally used as a sealant but was painted orange to blend in with the surroundings and be more visible in the dense fog. In 2007 it was ranked fifth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.
