A fifth-generation fighter, it is a conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) variant of Lockheed Martin's Joint Strike Fighter program. Nicknamed "Lightning II" after the Lockheed P-38 Lightning of World War II, it was designed to replace the U.S. Air Force's aging fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt II's. It flew its first flight in 2006 and went into full service in 2016. The U.S. military has deployed F-35s in several strike missions against terror groups.
