The third iteration of the Globemaster, the large C-17 airlifter operates as an American Air Force military transport plane, flying combat troops, supplies, vehicles, and equipment around the world. Used in both humanitarian aid and paratroop missions, it also carried the president's limousine and security detail. With a range of approximately 2,400 nautical miles and a cruise speed of approximately 450 knots, the C-17 can airdrop 102 paratroopers and equipment.
The C-17 is designed to operate on small airfields, with the capability to take off and land on runways as narrow as 3,500 feet and 90 feet wide. It can turn around by backing up and making a three-point star turn. In September, 2004, the first of 13 C-17 Globemaster IIIs arrived in New Jersey at the McGuire Air Force Base. Nicknamed, "The Spirit of New Jersey," the C-17 Globemaster III is used on the base to quickly and efficiently deliver cargo and troops wherever needed.
