This cast-molded pressurized resin scale model of the Apollo 11 Command Module measures 14-inches long and 5-3/4-inches wide. It comes in 1/48 scale, is rendered in fine detail, and includes the Lunar Excursion Module and a base. All parts of the replica are rendered to the scale of its real-life counterpart, adding to its authenticity. Recommended for Ages 14+. Carrying a three-person crew of Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins, the Apollo 11's Command Module capsule (named "Columbia") served as living quarters for the astronauts during its historic 1969 lunar landing mission. It was one of three parts of the complete Apollo spacecraft, along with the Service Module containing the propulsion system, and the Lunar Excursion Module (nicknamed, "Eagle") that descended upon the moon's service. In addition to being living quarters for the crew, the Command Module was tasked with bringing the astronauts safely back to earth. It splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969 at 12:49 PM ET, 812 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii, and 12 nautical miles from the USS Hornet, the aircraft carrier that hauled the capsule back to land. In 1971, the capsule found a home at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum after a national tour sponsored by NASA. It has been designated a "Milestone of Flight" by the Museum.
